At Ritchie Bros we have built domains around the expectations of what a platform is and should be, and significantly expanded the capabilities of Kubernetes to drive our core enterprise beyond the delivery platform including secure public cloud provisioning. In this talk we’ll discuss how we’ve used existing Kubernetes apis to expand the domain of what we manage in a platform context and how we leverage the same cloud native configuration, provisioning and observability tools to provision and configure many non Kubernetes products and services without team using a new suite of tools. We’ll show how we leveraged Open Telemetry Traces and Honeycomb to accomplish this, expanding the usual use of traces to uncommon places like Operators, Reconciliation Loops, Admission Controllers, and more. This expansion allows us to tell the story of the entire developer journey from one place, a powerful tool for observability and operational requirements.
