Your platform is made out of many different components at various levels. For many of these components, you have to decide whether you build it from scratch to fit your exact needs, adopt and adapt an Open Source solution, or pay a vendor to take care of the problem for you. Each option has its benefits, risks, and costs. Most commonly, you’ll end up having an amalgamation of built, adopted and bought software in your platform, that somehow runs all together to tackle business needs, make developers happy, and not burn out your team. In this panel, you’ll learn from people who’ve had to make these decisions to construct their platform many times. You’ll hear tips on how to wrangle budgets, lock-ins, and licenses to make decisions as you put together the foundations of your platform. You’ll also dive into day-2 experiences with these decisions and how to course-correct when needed.
